CONWAY, S.C. — Coastal Carolina held to just five base hits as the No. 14 Chanticleers knocked off No. 9 Clemson 5-3 on Tuesday night at Springs Brooks Park in Conway. The win gives Coastal a sweep of the home-and-home midweek series this season while Clemson finishes just 1-6 on its seven-game road swing.
Tryston McCladdie finished with three of the Tigers’ hits, including a solo homer in the third. Cam Cannarella also drove in a run, finishing the night 1-for-4, while Luke Gaffney added a late RBI single, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
In the first start of his career, Nathan Dvorsky suffered the loss (4-1) for Clemson (37-13), allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. He struck out two, walked two, and hit two more.
The Chants (38-11) jumped on Dvorsky immediately, getting back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the first. With runners on the corners, Dvorsky was called for a balk, scoring the runner from third. Coastal would later add a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 after an inning.
McCladdie led off the third with his fifth homer of the season, a 340-foot solo shot out to left, cutting the Chanticleers’ lead to 2-1. It was McCladdie’s first home run since the Georgia Tech series in late March.
Coastal would respond in the bottom half of the inning, with the first two runners reaching and ending Dvorsky’s night.
McCladdie was back at it in fifth, lacing a leadoff single into right, his second hit of the contest. After Andrew Ciufo bunted him to second, Cannarella ripped an RBI single into left-center, tying the game at 2-2.
Coastal went right back on top in the bottom half of the inning. After the first two runners reached, TP Wentworth came in out of the bullpen. A sac bunt moved the runners to second and third, and then a passed ball allowed a run to come off. That was followed up by a bloop single into right, plating another run and giving the Chants a 4-2 advantage.
The Chants added an insurance run in the seventh off reliever Hudson Lee, pushing their lead to 5-2.
Gaffney’s RBI single with one out in the eighth pulled the Tigers back within two runs at 5-3, but that is as close as they would get as Dominic Listi and Jacob Jarrell posted back-to-back strikeouts with runners at first and second.
Too Many Free Passes
Clemson pitchers only walked two hitters in the game, but they also hit six batters, resulting in seven free 90s. That is not the recipe for success. Coastal’s Walker Mitchell was hit four times and he scored two runs.
Lack of Two-Out Hits
For a second straight game, Clemson failed to register a hit with two outs. The Tigers finished 0-for-9. On the flip side of that, the Chants had three two-out hits and three of their runs came with two outs.
No Luck Priest
Collin Priest absolutely drilled a couple of balls in this one. In his first at-bat, he hit one with an exit velocity of 108 MPH. However, he hit it to the deepest part of the park in dead center, and the defender made a nice grab. His second time at the plate, he hit one 105 off the bat, but again to the deepest part of the park for another out.
Mahsteldt Rebounds
After blowing his first save of the season last Friday at Florida State, Lucas Mahlstedt rebounded nicely against Coastal. He threw 1.1 innings, holding the Chanticleers scoreless while striking out two.
Up Next
After seven straight road games, the Tigers will return home to host Duke for a three-game ACC series this weekend. Game one is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
