No Margin for Error for Clemson Baseball

My, how quickly things can change.

Two weeks ago, the Clemson Baseball team was riding high. The Tigers were headed to Raleigh fresh off a win over a Top 5 Georgia team. The Tigers were 36-10 overall, 13-5 in ACC play and firmly entrenched as a Top 8 national seed heading into that three-game set at NC State.

Since then, the wheels have fallen off. The Tigers were swept by the Wolfpack in rather dominating fashion. Even after that, most experts still projected Clemson as one of those ever-important Top 8 national seeds.

However, the Tigers weren’t able to right the ship the following weekend in Tallahassee. After giving one away in extra innings to Florida State to start the series, Clemson was able to bounce back and take game two. Although the weekend ended with an emphatic thud, as the Seminoles run-ruled the Tigers 20-9.

After losing the series to Florida State, D1 Baseball dropped the Tigers down to the No. 10 overall seed in their most recent projections. The Top 16 seeds will host a regional.

The skid then continued on Tuesday as Coastal Carolina knocked off Clemson 5-3, sending the Tigers to their sixth loss in the last seven games. While the RPI is still strong (No. 9), this team’s postseason fate is now very much up in the air.

Two weeks ago, it was hard to envision Clemson playing its way out of hosting an NCAA Regional, but that is very much on the table at this point. There is still time to right the ship, but with just six games remaining in the regular season, the margin for error is almost non-existent.

This weekend, Clemson will return home to host Duke with the two teams currently tied for sixth in the league standings. The Tigers are 25-5 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium this season. The team will then finish the season at Pitt, and playing on the road has not been kind to the Tigers in recent weeks. Clemson is now just 7-7 in true road games and has dropped six of the last seven away from home.

If this team were to somehow get it figured out and go 5-1 over the next two weekends, and win at least one game in the ACC Tournament, a Top 8 seed is still on the table. Far from a guarantee, but still on the table.

Anything worse than 4-2 over the final six games, and the Tigers could easily find themselves going on the road for regional play. Some of that might depend on what happens with other teams, but that is a very real possibility.

Right the ship now, and this recent skid is seen as nothing more than a bump in the road. But if the losses continue to mount, the Tigers won’t be hosting this season.
