Former Clemson star Seth Beer is back in affiliated ball.
Beer had been playing in the independent Atlantic League with the Long Island Ducks, but the first baseman has now signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Ducks announced Monday that Beer’s contract has been purchased by the Phillies organization, and he’ll report to the team’s Double-A affiliate in Reading, Pa.
“Seth has done a great job for us thus far and is very deserving of this opportunity,” Ducks manager Lew Ford said in a press release. “We wish him the best of luck with the Phillies organization.”
In 14 games with the Ducks, Beer slashed .239/.426/.565 and had a .991 OPS with four home runs, 14 RBI, 12 runs scored, 12 walks, 11 hits and three doubles. He led the team in walks and tied for the team lead in RBIs, thanks in large part to a couple of five-RBI games on April 29 and May 9.
The 28-year-old has played two Major League seasons (2021-22) with the Arizona Diamondbacks, recording two home runs, 12 RBIs, eight runs, 25 hits, four doubles and 12 walks across 43 games in the big leagues. In addition to the Diamondbacks, he has also spent time in the Houston Astros organization (2018-19) and the Pittsburgh Pirates system (2024).
Beer was drafted in the first round (28th) by the Astros in the 2018 MLB Draft, then was traded to the Diamondbacks in 2019. In December 2023, he was selected by the Pirates from the Diamondbacks in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 Draft. He elected free agency following the 2024 season on Nov. 4, 2024, before signing with the Ducks in April.
Beer, a three-time All-American at Clemson, won the Dick Howser Trophy as national player of the year in his freshman season of 2016. In his three-year career at Clemson (2016-18), he hit .321 with 41 doubles, a triple, 56 homers, 177 RBIs, 172 runs, 180 walks against only 98 strikeouts, a .489 on-base percentage and four steals in 188 games.
