Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney joined XL Primetime (1010 XL / 92.5 FM) and discussed a number of different topics, including Trevor Lawrence.
Swinney gave some thoughts on his former star quarterback, who is now entering his fifth season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Heading into the 2025 campaign, Lawrence has played in 62 games for the Jags, including two playoff games, and he’s started all of those contests.
Lawrence’s record as Jacksonville’s quarterback is currently 23-39, including the postseason. That’s unfamiliar territory for the talented signal-caller, considering he concluded his Clemson career 34-2 as a starter. Before that, the former five-star prospect and No. 1 recruit in the nation was 52-2 as a starter in his career at Cartersville (Ga.) High School, including a 41-game winning streak and 14-2 record in the playoffs.
“He wins. If you know anything about Trevor Lawrence, just go back and look at his career. He’s always won. Forever,” Swinney said.
“This guy, what’d he lose, one game in high school maybe, maybe two. And then he comes to Clemson and wins 29 straight and (played in) back-to-back national championship games, three straight playoffs, three straight conference (championship) games. He was second in the Heisman (Trophy voting in 2020). I mean, he’s just always won.”
Of course, Lawrence was labeled as a “generational prospect” coming out of Clemson, and he has experienced success in his young NFL career – especially in 2022, when he earned Pro Bowl honors and led the Jaguars to the AFC South division title, as well as an incredible comeback victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card playoffs.
However, Lawrence has also battled his share of adversity while struggling with inconsistent play, turnovers and injuries. Last season, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve in early December after his shoulder injury and concussion. He underwent successful surgery on Dec. 17 to repair the AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.
“There’s been some challenges that he’s had to deal with, and part of that’s being in the NFL. I mean, how many undefeated teams have there been in the NFL. It’s a different deal,” Swinney said.
“And then he’s had some injury. He was never a guy that really battled a lot of injuries, and he’s had a couple of tough breaks. But he’s as tough as they come.”
Over his first four NFL seasons, Lawrence has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions in his 60 games. The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension prior to the 2024 season.
Swinney believes the future is still very bright for the 25-year-old franchise QB.
“He’s incredibly smart, incredibly gifted,” Swinney said. “He’s got a long future ahead of him and I’m excited to watch it all play out.”
