CLEMSON – Shortstop Marian Collins personally called game in all three of Clemson’s wins in the Clemson Regional Tournament.
On Friday, the freshman sprinted home from second base as fellow underclassman Taylor Pipkins roped a double, putting the Tigers up 10-2 over USC Upstate. When the Marietta, Ga., native stomped on home plate and was swarmed by her cheering teammates, No. 11 overall seed Clemson had clinched its first NCAA Regional victory in just five innings.
Collins went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs against Upstate. Her outing included a two-run double and a first-inning single that jump-started the Tigers’ offense. She accounted for 30 percent of the team’s hits and RBIs, and 20 percent of its runs scored.
The following day, Collins, who was named to this year’s ACC All-Freshman Team, rose to the moment once again. Facing tournament No. 3 seed Northwestern, the Tigers struggled for eight innings, striking out, grounding out, and leaving runners on base against Wildcats ace Lauren Boyd, an All-Big Ten pitcher.
In the ninth inning, catcher Aby Vieira blasted a triple, marking the first time a Clemson runner reached third base all game. Collins, batting next, took a deep breath and laid down a perfect squeeze bunt. She beat the throw to first as Vieira crossed the plate with the game’s only run.
Again, Collins called game.
In Sunday’s championship game of the Clemson (NCAA) Regional, Collins again sealed the deal. Fielding a ground ball, she delivered a sharp throw to first baseman Julia Knowler for the final out of the regional, as Clemson knocked off No. 2 seed Kentucky, 5-1.

“When the pressure starts to hit in the seventh inning, trying to slow the moment down, trust in my defense, trust my pitchers got my back, all my teammates have my back in that moment too,” Collins said about the final play after the win.
Offensively, Collins went 3-for-3 with a walk on Sunday, marking her 15th multi-hit game of the season. She finished the weekend 8-for-9 with 4 RBIs and a .917 on-base percentage, while maintaining a perfect fielding percentage across all three games.
“I can’t say enough about Marian Collins and the job she did this weekend,” head coach John Rittman said. “She was on fire today, four quality at-bats, three for four with a walk. She played outstanding.”
Clemson will need more clutch performances from Collins and others as the Tigers head to face No. 6 seed Texas in the Austin Super Regional, beginning Thursday, May 22.
