A national outlet broke down the top 10 quarterback rooms heading into the upcoming college football campaign.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked Clemson as the fifth-best quarterback room entering the 2025 season.
“Cade Klubnik is my top returning quarterback in college football and was arguably the most improved player in the nation last year,” PFF’s Max Chadwick wrote. “He tied for 107th among FBS signal-callers in 2023 with a 63.7 passing grade and improved to fifth this past season with an 87.7 mark. Klubnik’s 80.8 PFF grade under pressure was also more than five points higher than any other quarterback in the country.
“Redshirt sophomore Christopher Vizzina looks like the future of the program and was a top-10 quarterback from the 2023 recruiting class.”
Klubnik is widely viewed as a Heisman Trophy candidate and one of the best, if not the best, quarterback in college football going into the 2025 season. He broke out as a junior last season, when he was one of two quarterbacks in the country to throw for more than 3,500 yards and run for 400.
Klubnik also finished second nationally in total touchdowns with 43. He was third nationally in touchdown passes with 36, and his six interceptions were second fewest among quarterbacks who threw 28 or more touchdown passes in 2024.
As for Vizzina, he saw limited action as a redshirt freshman last season, completing 19-of-34 pass attempts for 190 yards in seven game appearances. He also rushed for 68 yards, including his first career touchdown that came on a fourth-down play in the blowout win over App State last September.
While Vizzina lacks game experience, the talent is there for the former five-star and top-50 national prospect who passed for more than 7,000 yards and had 59 touchdown passes in his prep career at Birmingham’s Briarwood Christian School.
While Klubnik has just one season of eligibility remaining, Vizzina will still have two more years once Klubnik is done, meaning Vizzina is the obvious choice as the heir apparent.
The Tigers elected to sign only one quarterback in the 2025 class, flipping Chris Denson late after longtime commit Blake Hebert flipped to Notre Dame. Redshirt junior quarterback Trent Pearman joins Klubnik, Vizzina and Denson on Clemson’s current roster.
Two other ACC schools – SMU and Miami – rank No. 2 and No. 6, respectively, on PFF’s list of the top 10 QB rooms entering 2025.
Clemson’s season opening opponent, LSU, landed at No. 1 in the ranking.
“The Tigers have a top-five quarterback in the country and a legitimate Heisman candidate leading them in Garrett Nussmeier,” Chadwick wrote. “He threw for the fifth-most passing yards in the nation last year (4,043) while tying for seventh in big-time throws (26).
“Behind him is Mississippi State-transfer Michael Van Buren Jr., who showed encouraging signs during eight starts in his true freshman year. His first two came on the road against a couple elite defenses in Texas and Georgia, and he responded with a 79.0 passing grade with five big-time throws and no turnover-worthy plays in those contests. LSU also has a couple former four-star recruits in the room as well in sophomore Ju’Juan Johnson and redshirt freshman Colin Hurley.”
