Swinney Camp Notebook: Day 2 Morning Session

CLEMSON — The second day of Dabo Swinney’s high school football camp is underway after over 500 players showed up for competition yesterday. With a new batch of campers comes more to dive into and to share.

The Clemson Insider was on the sidelines this morning, primarily observing offensive linemen and running backs. There were a lot of players to look out for, so strap in.

  • Perhaps the biggest prospect that worked out in the morning session was linebacker Cooper Witten from Texas (Argyle). A rising junior at Liberty Christian, Witten is nationally ranked as the #1 linebacker in the nation and a top #25 overall prospect. He showed that he is deserving of the ranking, as his speed and physical drive were evident on the field. His participation in cone drills helped show his elusiveness and agility, a player who can come out of nowhere and light you up.
  • Offensive lineman Kalel Johnson, who attends Taft High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, came to compete. His size and stature speak for themselves. Standing at 6-foot-7 and 281 pounds, Johnson’s build is scary to line up across from. A member of the class of 2027, he is currently a four-star recruit and ranked within the top 25 offensive tackles. Despite his size, he showed incredible speed and footwork in drills, and his strength was evident.
  • A returning camper in Carter “Big Red” Mathes showed up to work this morning as an offensive lineman. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound interior lineman from Gainesville, Georgia, who attends Gainesville High School, currently holds offers from Auburn, USF, Kennesaw State, and more. Besides his size, his hands and footwork are smooth and powerful, and he held a focus and drive that everyone around him could see.
  • Another offensive lineman in attendance was Peyton Miller from Anna, Texas. Miller is a rising junior at Anna High School and is currently ranked as a four-star prospect and in the top 15 lineman rankings in the nation. After previously attending a Texas camp and receiving an offer, he plans to head across the nation to schools like Penn State, Duke, Texas Tech, and Arizona to pay visits. Miller showed great skill with his hands, and his footwork and agility stood out among the rest.
  • Offensive lineman Carter Jones wraps up his position group for the morning session. The No. 3 ranked prospect in his home state of Virginia, Jones is a four-star in the class of 2027. His standout attributes were his quick feet, which are hard to find as consistent and speedy in most interior linemen. His motor was never-ending, and he never displayed fatigue or anguish, and his dominant 6-foot-6, 290-pound build seemed always at maximum power.
  • Running back Tre Segarra worked with the Tigers this morning, and it was clear that he deserved the offer that Clemson gave him this past weekend. With additional offers from schools like Tennessee and South Carolina, Segarra is ranked as a four-star and a top 10 in-state rusher (Duncan). He was a clear talent on the field, displaying his elite footwork and agility as well as his strength and power in his runs.
  • Another running back of note was Aiden Gibson, an in-state rusher from Woodruff, South Carolina. Gibson is in the class of 2027, and his skills during ladder and cone drills shone bright. He has obvious drive and determination, and you can feel his intensity from the sidelines. Additionally, he showed his passion and tough running skills while maintaining smooth cuts and turns in the drills.
  • Linebacker Elijah Chaffin also competed this morning, showing off his powerful speed and agility and sneaky-good strength. A member of the class of 2027 from Mocksville, North Carolina, Chaffin attends Davie County High School where he shines as a linebacker for his team. With only two offers coming from Appalachian State and Marshall, Chaffin is a hidden gem that is soon to be shown and discovered as he continues to put in work. It is already evident, however, that he has the skills to be something great.
