Behind the Scenes of Houston’s Impressive Camp Performance

CLEMSON — This year’s Dabo Swinney high school camp is now officially in the books, and one of the biggest storylines surrounding this year’s event would be which 2027 quarterback would draw Clemson’s first offer.

That question has now been answered as four-star Peyton Houston announced an offer Sunday afternoon after working out on Sunday morning.

Houston basically killed it from the outset. This was after his father, Shaun Houston, told TCI, “Just wait until he gets warmed up, and then we will see some stuff.” Well, we didn’t have to wait long.

The 6-foot signal caller can make all of the throws. He makes it look effortless and does it with what can be described as surgical-like precision. Multiple times, offensive coordinator Garrett Riley broke out in a smile after one of Houston’s throws hit the mark. Swinney, John Grass and Tajh Boyd all watched on at certain points, as did Jordan Sorrells and Kevin Kelly.

Even more impressive is the fact that Houston delivered such a performance after experiencing numerous travel issues on Saturday night. Houston’s father told TCI that due to a cancellation, they ended up having to fly into Asheville instead of Charlotte, then had to Uber from Asheville to Greenville.

It was almost 3 a.m. before they were settled into their hotel room, then had to get up bright and early and secure a rental car to make the trip down the road to Clemson. He might have been a tad late getting onto the practice field, but it certainly didn’t impact his performance.

Both of Houston’s parents made the trip. When the quarterback visited in March, he was only accompanied by his father. The elder Houston also told TCI that he was so impressed by Dabo Swinney and the way he runs his program that he wanted to bring Houston’s mom on this trip so she could experience what he did on that initial visit.

Houston now becomes the Tigers’ top QB target. So far, he is the only quarterback with an offer, and based on our conversation with his father, this is a recruitment that Clemson can eventually win. Houston still plans to visit Southern Cal, where he is the Trojans’ only quarterback offer so far. He is also the only quarterback Brent Venables has offered at Oklahoma, and he is fresh off a trip to Norman.

Houston posted a bible verse in announcing his offer on Sunday, one that could be an indicator of exactly what kind of match this might potentially be.

“He that dwells in the secret place of God shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” -Psalms 91:1
