Sporting News ranked the top 25 “hottest” rivalries in college football for 2025, weighing “the historical nature with the present tense” when it comes to various rivalries.
Several factors went into the ranking, including who won last year, which school has the current winning streak, what the last 10 years looked like, and how many times both teams were ranked when they played.
With all that considered, Clemson-South Carolina came in at No. 10 in the ranking.
The Gamecocks were victorious in last season’s matchup at Death Valley, winning 17-14. But Clemson beat South Carolina in Columbia in 2023, and the Tigers are 7-2 against the Gamecocks in the last 10 years, with the two schools not meeting in 2020 due to a cancellation because of COVID.
Clemson has won eight of the last 10 meetings in the rivalry overall.
There have been two ranked matchups between Clemson and South Carolina since 2015, including last season’s matchup. Both of those matchups were won by South Carolina.
“The Gamecocks have won both ranked matchups in the last 10 seasons – but Clemson has won the other seven meetings,” Sporting News wrote. “Shane Beamer has spiced a series where the road team has won each of the last five meetings, and there is a hint of pressure on Dabo Swinney to re-take the Palmetto State in 2025. When this rivalry is hot, it’s as good as any in college football.”
Clemson leads 73-44-4 in the all-time series. Clemson’s 73 all-time wins against South Carolina are the program’s most against any opponent.
South Carolina won the series opener in 1896 before Clemson evened the series in 1897. Clemson won the third game in the series in 1898 to take a 2-1 series lead — a lead Clemson hasn’t relinquished.
The rivalry will reignite on Saturday, Nov. 29 when Clemson travels to Columbia to face South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Clemson has won each of its last five road games at South Carolina across the 2015-23 seasons, and a win would give the Tigers six straight road wins against the Gamecocks for the first time since winning in Columbia six straight times across the 1989-99 seasons.
Clemson is 18-6 against the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium since 1977.
Sporting News ranked Michigan-Ohio State as the No. 1 hottest rivalry. Texas-Oklahoma, Auburn-Alabama, Army-Navy and Alabama-LSU round out the top five.
As for rivalries including an ACC team or teams, Florida State-Florida is ranked No. 12, while Florida State-Miami is No. 17, Louisville-Kentucky is No. 18, and Georgia Tech-Georgia is No. 23.
