For the second straight summer, Ja’Hyde Brown made a summer stop in Clemson to work out at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp.
The 2027 wideout, out of Christian Academy of Louisville (KY), has long desired to earn one of those hard-to-get offers from the Tigers, and he feels his workout on June 4 puts him one step closer to achieving that goal.
“I had a great experience at Clemson camp this year,” Brown told The Clemson Insider. “I think it doubled my experience from last year. This time, I was able to go on the tour, see the facilities and meet with coach Grisham a little bit more.”
With another year of experience under his belt, Brown is a more polished receiver than he was at this time last year, and receivers coach Tyler Grisham noticed. Brown, who has helped lead his high school team to back-to-back state titles, has also experienced a substantial growth spurt, adding close to four inches. He is now close to 5-foot-11. The one thing Grisham wanted Brown to work on was his speed.
“First, he noticed my growth spurt,” Brown said. “He also told me I don’t have to go back home and focus on any specific receiver stuff. He just wanted to see my straight line speed improve.”
On top of camping at Clemson, Brown has also worked out at Alabama, where he ran a 4.48 forty. Prior to the Clemson camp, Brown’s forty time was over 4.5, and after his time in Tuscaloosa, he feels he is showing improvement in the area that Grisham specified. The 4.48 was his best time of the summer.
Brown also worked out at a Rivals camp and an Under Armor camp this summer, and still has a trip to Tennessee he is planning to take.
Louisville, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Pitt and Indiana were some of Brown’s previous offers. He added one from Alabama late last week after his workout in Tuscaloosa, then Oklahoma and Oklahoma State both offered on Sunday.
Despite all of these doors that are starting to open, Brown is still looking to add that offer from Clemson.
“It would mean a lot to me,” Brown said. “I have been looking at Clemson for a long time now. Growing up, they were always playing Louisville. It is just a school that I have always had an interest in. Clemson would be in my top two for sure.”
Brown hasn’t given much thought to a timeline for making a decision, but he is thinking he’d like to have one made by the start of his senior season next year. For now, he is planning to just continue navigating the process
“I am just looking for a coaching staff that can develop me as a player and a man,” Brown said. “And a team that is going to utilize my abilities.”
