Expert says One MLB Team Should Trade to Draft Cannarella

Ahead of the 2025 MLB Draft, a new mock draft was released with ESPN’s experts giving the picks they believe each team should make in the first rounds of the draft – not necessarily the players they think teams will actually take.

In the mock draft, ESPN’s Jeff Passan says the Arizona Diamondbacks should trade slugging third baseman Eugenio Suarez to the Seattle Mariners in order to acquire the No. 35 overall pick – and take Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella with that pick, which comes in Competitive balance round A.

“The Mariners need a power bat and full-time third baseman, and they get him in exchange for the No. 35 pick,” Passan wrote. “Cannarella entered the season a potential top-10 pick, but between a labrum injury in his right shoulder and a lack of home runs, he dipped toward a comp-round selection. Cool by Arizona. Cannarella is a no-doubt center fielder with immense range and as Druw Jones continues to struggle with the bat, Cannarella can be the glove-first option of Arizona’s future.”

In 61 games as a junior this past season, Cannarella hit .353 with five homers, two triples, 22 doubles, 52 RBIs, 62 runs, a .479 on-base percentage and six steals. He ended the season on a 44-game on-base streak and 22-game hitting streak, and during that hitting streak, he hit .421 with four homers, a triple, 11 doubles, a .684 slugging percentage and .491 on-base percentage.

Cannarella was named a third-team All-American in 2025, becoming the first Clemson player since Seth Beer (2016-18) to be an All-American in multiple years, as Cannarella was also a third-team All-American in 2024.

Over his three-year Tiger career (2023-25), Cannarella has posted a .360 batting average while tallying 262 hits, 54 doubles, eight triples, 23 homers, 159 RBIs, 192 runs and 30 steals in 178 games. He also recorded a .551 slugging percentage and .453 on-base percentage.

Cannarella is the No. 34 overall prospect in this year’s draft class, according to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel’s draft rankings, while MLB.com ranks him as the No. 36 overall draft prospect.

The 2025 MLB Draft will take place from July 13-14 in Atlanta.
