Don’t Sleep On Tyler Brown

It feels like one player in the Clemson wide receiver room is being a little slept on.

An ankle injury severely impacted Tyler Brown’s 2024 season, forcing him to take a redshirt. With TJ Moore and Bryant Wesco emerging as big-play threats entering their second seasons, Antonion Williams returning for his senior campaign, and Tristan Smith being added via the portal, it’s understandable how Brown has become, at least to some, the forgotten man in that room.

However, overlook Brown at your own peril. There was a reason he earned freshman All-American honors and led the Tigers in both receptions (52) and receiving yards (531) in 2023. While the receiver room is undoubtedly much deeper heading into the coming season, there is a place for Brown’s talents. And having him fully healthy makes the room that much better.

Andrea Adelson of ESPN recently touched on the subject.

“One of the reasons Clemson is expected to compete for a national championship this season is the return of its stellar receiver group, which made vast improvements a year ago to help the Tigers’ offense rediscover its footing. Antonio Williams, Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore have received the bulk of the headlines nationally, but don’t forget about Brown, a freshman All-American in 2023 who was forced to take a redshirt last season with an ankle injury. Coach Dabo Swinney spoke highly about Brown during spring practice and is expecting him to have a big role in the offense. Adding depth to a position that had been a weak spot until last season is crucial.

Along with Williams, Brown gives the Tigers two potent weapons that can thrive in the slot, with Moore, Wesco and Smith serving as the outside threats. Add Cole Turner into the mix, and quarterback Cade Klubnik has a plethora of weapons at his disposal.

Looking at this wide receiver room on paper takes one back to Kirk Herbstreit’s line, “an embarrassment of riches,” as he called one of Travie Etienne’s touchdown runs during his freshman season. At the same time, this group still has to go out and prove it on the field, and a healthy Brown certainly figures to play a big role in how productive this group of pass catchers will be in 2025.
