CHARLOTTE – No player embodies head coach Dabo Swinney’s development philosophy more fully than quarterback Christopher Vizzina.
A former five-star recruit out of Birmingham, Ala., Vizzina had his pick of college programs. As a freshman in high school, the 6-foot-4 signal caller began receiving offers from all across the country, from hometown schools like UAB to national powers like Notre Dame. Programs 20 minutes from home like Samford and 20 hours from home like Arizona came calling to court Briarwood Christian High Schools’ four-year starter.
At many places, simply committing might have earned him a starting role.
But Vizzina declined offers from Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, and over 20 other programs for one reason.
“I’ve been all over the country, and I keep coming back here,” Vizzina told Swinney during a 2022 visit to his office. “This is where I want to be.”
Now entering his third season at Clemson, Vizzina has remained true to his word. Despite serving as a backup to Cade Klubnik throughout his college career—and in a transfer era where over 300 quarterbacks entered the portal this offseason, according to 247Sports—Vizzina has stayed at Clemson.
“This is about a journey,” Swinney told Vizzina in an Instagram video shared during his commitment. “It’s going to be an amazing journey, and when you walk out of here, you are going to be unbelievably proud of what you’ve done in football, but you are going to be ready for life… You’re going to be family.”
Though he hasn’t started a game in his first two seasons, Vizzina still contributed to the “family” in seven contests last year, completing 19 passes for 190 yards. While Klubnik’s development has played out on a very public stage on Saturdays, Vizzina has earned his reps behind the scenes, diligently progressing in practice.
Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley believes the next step for Vizzina is building reps and confidence. According to Klubnik, that confidence is becoming visible.
“I love CV. Just his work ethic, he’s just gotten better every year and at a position where you have to keep striving to be better and you can’t stay where you’re at,” Klubnik said Thursday at the 2025 ACC Kickoff in Charlotte. “He just keeps getting better. It’s like every six months he’s taken a big jump, and I’ve just been really proud of him. I think it shows a lot just of his loyalty and love for the program and everything. Just really proud of him.”
According to Yahoo Sports, 43 of the 68 starting quarterbacks across Power Four teams last season were transfers. At Clemson, however, no transfer quarterback has started under Swinney since he became head coach in 2008.
That’s by design.
Swinney has built his program on selective recruiting and long-term development. And though Vizzina hasn’t yet had the opportunity to take over as Clemson’s offensive leader, he’s benefited from rare continuity, working under the same head coach and offensive coordinator for his entire college career, a stability few players at his position enjoy.
His patience may soon be rewarded as Klubnik is set to exhaust his eligibility after the 2025 season. Until then, Vizzina remains locked in, preparing for any moment that may thrust him into the spotlight.
In the meantime, he is still where he wants to be– home in Clemson.
