CHARLOTTE — Dabo Swinney expects more from Cade Klubnik this year.
“I think we can put more on him,” the Clemson coach said earlier this week. “Whether it be more package type stuff, check with me type stuff. He is a very, very smart player.”
Last year, Klubnik was one of the top quarterbacks in the country, as he rebounded from a so-so year in 2023, to become one of the top quarterbacks in the country in 2024.
The Clemson quarterback tallied 43 touchdowns last year, while gaining more than 4,150 yards of offense in leading the Tigers to another ACC Championship and an appearance in the College Football Playoff.
However, even Klubnik knows there is more he can do to get the Tigers back to the top of the mountain in college football.
“We’ve been a young team, I feel like, every year I’ve been here,” Klubnik said. “But now we’re a veteran team and very experienced, got a lot of guys, like me, that have played a lot of ball. That’s really exciting, but we’ve got to go do it. We’ve got to go do it and take advantage of every opportunity we get.”
Swinney says Klubnik just needs to continue to do what he has been doing and do what he did last season. If he and the Tigers do that, they will continue to progress.
“More of the same. Continue to be elite and protect the football and not putting us in advantageous situations,” Swinney said. “Be even better when it comes to complete ownership of the system, the details, the precision of what we are doing.
“Just being fanatical about the boring mundane details. He has earned [his accolades], so now let’s just build on that, just one more or higher level. If he does that, he is going to have a heck of a year.”
And so is Clemson.
