While it may be coming down to the wire, the Miami Marlins are expected to get a deal done with former Clemson star Cam Cannarella.
According to a report from MLB.com’s Jim Callis, Cannarella will sign before the 5 p.m. deadline on Monday. The Marlins took Cannarella No. 43 overall, with the final pick in the first round.
“Cannarella slashed .353/.479/.530 at Clemson this spring while displaying some of the best bat-to-ball skills and center-field defense in the college ranks,” Callis wrote. “His slot (No. 43) comes with an assigned value of $2,276,700, while the Marlins can pay him as much as $2,277,425 without exceeding their bonus pool.”
“Teams can outspend their bonus pool by up to 5 percent by paying a 75 percent penalty tax on their overage, while eclipsing it by more than that amount would result in the forfeiture of at least one future first-round pick. Miami could pay Cannarella as much as $3,036,975 by going 5 percent over, though it has not surpassed its pool since 2021.”
Cannarella just wrapped up a three-year career with the Tigers that saw him hit .360 with 23 home runs and 159 RBI. He also had 54 doubles, eight triples and 30 stolen bases, with 24 of those coming during his freshman season before a shoulder injury suffered early during the 2024 campaign.
Not only was Cannarella considered one of the best pure hitters in the country during his Clemson career, he was also seen as arguably the top defensive centerfielder.
