Offensive Observations: Camp Day 1

CLEMSON — Clemson opened camp Thursday behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex. The media was allowed to watch the first six and a half periods in Day 1 of camp.

Below are some of the things we were able to observe from practice.

–The most noticeable thing to start practice was the Tigers’ practice cap. All players, with quarterbacks, punters and kickers being the exception, were wearing new protective caps. The caps are the exact replica of the Clemson helmet.

–As Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney reported earlier on Thursday, running back Jay Haynes was in a green jersey. He was wearing a brace on his left leg to protect his knee. He tore his ACL in his left knee in last year’s ACC Championship Game.

–Running back Adam Randall looked smooth running pass routes with the running backs, which is no surprise. Randall also appeared to have gotten a little bigger and stronger. He appears to weigh somewhere between 225 to 230 pounds.

–During the first drill of the day, when players shuffle through the pads, quarterback Cade Klubnik and wide receiver Antonio Williams were racing through the drill. Klubnik won the drill, but Williams ran past him as they tried to get to the practice fields. Klubnik tried to grab him from behind to slow down as both were laughing.

–I am assuming this is Clemson’s new mantra this year. This was on the video board on the practice fields behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex. “I can. I am. I will. We can. We are. We will.”

–We got to watch all four punters work today. Jack Smith had punts of 45, 47 and 40 yards from what we saw. He also shanked a punt. The only one from the group. Robert Gunn was second. His punts were 47, 40, 35-yard wobbler and then a 45-yarder which had the best hangtime of anyone. Will McCune had punts of 37, 40 and 50 yards. His 50-yarders was the longest of the four. Former soccer player, Charlie Reed, had a 40-yard punt.

–As Swinney reported, Olsen Patt-Henry did not practice. With him out Josh Sapp, Christian Bentancur and Logan Brooking took first, second and third-team reps, while former basketball star Ian Schieffelin was No. 4, followed by Banks Pope and Charlie Johnson.

–We got a chance to watch the offensive line, and we notice that Collin Sadler was taking first-team left guard reps, while Elijah Thurmon was second-team left guard. Harris Sewell was second-team center. Tristan Leigh is at left tackle, Ryan Linthicum is at center, Walker Parks is at right guard and Blake Miller is right tackle. Freshman Brayden Jacobs (6-7, 350) is second-team left tackle, Dietrick Pennington is second-team right guard and Mason Wade is second team right tackle.
