CLEMSON — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about Wednesday’s weigh-in prior to the start of Thursday’s practice, the first of fall camp for the Tigers at the Poe Indoor Practice Facility.
“There were a bunch of kids that, honestly, stood out,” the Clemson coach said. “I could tell there were a lot of guys that really bought in and a lot of guys that really changed their bodies.”
Swinney specifically pointed out how defensive back Braden Strozier stood out during weigh-ins, as well as quarterback Cade Klubnik. The Tigers’ head coach said Klubnik checked in at 212 pounds.
“He was 175 pounds when he got here, and he was 212 yesterday,” Swinney said. “He looks great. He will probably settle out around 208 to 209 range. He has a great foundation going into camp.”
Swinney also said a bunch of offensive and defensive linemen looked really good, he especially pointed out defensive tackle DeMonte Capehart.
“There are a bunch of guys that jumped out to me,” Swinney said. “It is obvious that they have really been committed. If they will show up like that, they will be elite. I think our entire team did what they had to do individually coming back and not necessarily be the final version, but the best version of themselves since they have been at Clemson.”
Swinney also said defensive tackle Vic Burley had a good spring and a good summer and is in position to do what they need him to do this coming season.
Swinney said he spoke with his spokesperson on Wednesday about the weigh-ins being public, and he said he did not know they were being released in the past. So, he decided that was something that does not really need to be released and given to their opponents.
“Let’s keep the guessing,” Swinney said.
The Clemson coach did say if the media asked specifically about a player, he would give that number out.
Swinney was later asked about linebacker Jamal Anderson. He said the linebacker is up to 226 pounds, about 11 to 12 pounds heavier than he was last year.
Anderson, according to Swinney, will be playing the WILL (weak side) backer position. He also can play SAM (strong side) if they needed him to.
“This is a big year for him,” Swinney said. “He missed the entire spring. We are going to need him, so this is a big year and he is ready to help us.”
Swinney said Kobe McCloud looked good and is another guy they need this year. McCloud missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the App State Game in Week 2.
He also said cornerback Avieon Terrell was 188-pounds on Wednesday, while wide receiver Bryant Wesco is 191. Redshirt freshman Drew Woodaz checked in at 220 pounds.
