Clemson Scrimmage Insider

CLEMSON — Clemson held a two-hour scrimmage Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium. It was the first scrimmage of fall camp for the sixth-ranked Tigers.

After the scrimmage, The Clemson Insider was able to speak to a couple of sources who were able to watch the scrimmage. Here are some notes on what we heard.

–As head coach Dabo Swinney reported, quarterbacks Cade Klubnik and Christopher Vizzina both threw interceptions. He also said Misun “Tink” Kelley had an interception, as did Branden Strozier. We were told Klubnik’s interception came off the goal line or deep in the offense’s own territory. Kelley picked off Klubnik and returned it for a touchdown. Vizzina’s interception came during red zone drills. The offense was inside the 10-yard line when Strozier made a good play and picked the ball off in the end zone. Swinney mentioned to us in the media that they could not get the defender down. The reason for that, we were told, is that the offensive players thought the play was dead and gave up on the play sooner than they were supposed to.

–There were a lot of good things the offense and defense did. We were told it was a very balanced scrimmage. They said the team is very deep and lots of guys were making plays on both sides of the ball.

–Staying with the quarterback theme, we were told Trent Pearman led one touchdown drive for the third team and was 5-for-5 on the drive. We were also told freshman Chris Denson made a few plays. They said he is still young and makes freshman mistakes, but “he is going to be a really good quarterback.” They said he made a few plays with his legs and he looked really good doing it.

–At running back, we heard Adam Randall is getting most of the first-team reps, as expected. They said he had a couple of 8- and 10-yard runs, and he looked very good and confident in everything he was doing.

–We also heard David Eziomume started as the second-team running back. We were told all the running backs looked good, especially true freshman Gideon Davidson, who had a couple of long runs. He primarily worked with the second and third teams we were told.

–All the wide receivers looked good. Our sources said Antonio Williams and T.J. Moore had a couple of really good catches. They said the wide receivers look as good, as a group, as what the Tigers had back in the day with Sammy Watkins, Nuk Hopkins, Adam Humphries class. They said they are not saying they are that good, but “they are scary good.” New offensive analyst/ wide receivers coach Lonnie Galloway is really making a difference with the wideouts. We are told, “he is the best thing that has happened for Tyler Grisham in his development as a coach.”

–On the defensive side, we heard transfer defensive end Will Heldt had a very good scrimmage and was making all kinds of plays in the backfield. They said he makes this team really good and is definitely what they needed on defense.

–Speaking of the defense, we were told it is very noticeable how better the team is in tackling and how they are flying to the football. They said new defensive coordinator Tom Allen has his fingerprints all over it. “They are going after the football. They are hunting and then they are popping.”

–Speaking of “popping,” new transfer linebacker Jeremiah Alexander is really doing it. We were told he is a headhunter out there and brings the pop. They said he is also a very physical specimen, one of the best they have seen at Clemson in a long time.

–Swinney indicated that kicker Nolan Hauser was “average” this week and he was 2-for-3 on Saturday with his kicks and the one they missed “was on him.” However, TCI was told one of the kicks was blocked, which keep in mind could be a PAT or something like that, so it might not be the kick Swinney was saying Hauser missed.
