Jags OC Talks Lawrence’s Offseason Improvements

Former Clemson star Trevor Lawrence has made a lot of improvements this offseason, according to his new offensive coordinator.

Jacksonville Jaguars OC Grant Udinski recently met with the media and spoke about the growth Lawrence has shown over the last few weeks under first-year Jags head coach and offensive guru Liam Coen, including Lawrence’s command of the offense.

“I think you see that growth in terms of the master of the offense. We talked about it a little bit at the very beginning of training camp, and even a little bit in the spring. I think you see that starting to click,” said Udinski, who was hired as the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator in early February.

“Now, there are still things around him that can improve, and there are still areas that he can improve, and he knows that. But each day in a different setting or a different play, you see one little thing or two little things, or sometimes it’s a lot of things, that come together where you see that improvement in terms of that mastery of his role.”

So, if Udinski could only pick one area in which Lawrence has made the most strides over the past few weeks, what would that be?

Udinski says there are too many areas of improvement to choose just one, when it comes to the 25-year-old franchise quarterback.

“It’s hard to pick just one,” he said. “I try to count all the things that he improved on and appreciate all of them, so I don’t know that I would just pick one. But I think when we look at the operation of the offense and his control of the line of scrimmage, the cadence, some of those things that we still are working to improve as a unit. But his personal growth is evident, and that stuff — the footwork, some of the reads, playing fast completion – so, there’s a lot of things that they see. It makes it tough to pick one.”

Lawrence is entering his fifth NFL season in 2025. Over his first four seasons, he has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 13,815 yards and 69 touchdowns with 46 interceptions.

The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension prior to the 2024 campaign, when he completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games before being placed on injured reserve following his shoulder injury and concussion. He underwent surgery last December to repair the AC joint sprain in his left (non-throwing) shoulder and entered training camp this year 100 percent healthy.

Lawrence knows he’s had his ups and downs over the start of his NFL career with the Jaguars, and he recently acknowledged that 2025 is a big year for him.

“I feel like this is like getting into my prime,” Lawrence said. “I got a lot of good years left ahead of me, and I need to really turn it on. And I think what we’ve built around me and what they’ve done this offseason has been a great start.”

Lawrence completed 6 of his 7 passes for 43 yards in the Jaguars’ preseason opener against the Steelers on Aug. 9 in Jacksonville, before going 8-of-10 passing for 76 yards with a touchdown pass in Sunday’s Week 2 preseason game against the Saints. He lost a fumble on Jacksonville’s opening drive against the Saints before bouncing back to lead the TD drive on the Jaguars’ second possession.
