Former ACC Coach Calls Clemson ‘Cream of the Crop’

Clemson certainly has all the tools to win a title, with a wealth of talent, experience, weapons and playmakers on both sides of the ball. But will the Tigers claim the conference crown yet again in 2025?

Former Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson recently weighed in on that while previewing what to expect from this ACC this season with ESPN’s Rece Davis and ESPN senior writer Dan Wetzel on the College GameDay Podcast.

Clawson got a firsthand look at the Tigers during spring practice, and not only does he think Clemson can win the ACC once again, but he believes they have what it takes to win another national title.

“That is one of the places I visited in the spring, and I think they have a chance to get back to the Clemson that did compete and win national championships,” Clawson said.

Of course, Clawson is very familiar with Clemson, having faced the Tigers throughout his tenure as Wake Forest’s head coach from 2014-24.

Clawson assessed what he sees from this year’s Clemson team and whether anyone in the ACC can challenge the Tigers.

“I think they’re the cream of the crop,” Clawson said. “Just watching Clemson at times a little too up close over the last 11 years, we never quite got them. They are getting back to the offensive skill level that they had when I first got to Wake. They had Deshaun Watson, they had really good wide receivers, and then for a while, the defense kind of carried them. But I think if you look at Klubnik and their offensive skill level, they’re back to being an elite receiver group. And then a lot of people were critical of Dabo’s not using the portal, but what he did is he’s built such a great culture there that he’s retained all of his best players.

“And now you add a kid like Will Heldt from Purdue, who was very highly sought after. We recruited him out of high school, and he had a great career at Purdue. And now he can pick and choose and add pieces to fill in any holes.”

Davis, host of ESPN’s College GameDay, is very high on Clemson as well heading into the 2025 campaign.

“I expect great things from Clemson, and I would say they’re the favorites, in my judgment, to win the national championship and certainly to win the ACC,” he said. “But, that’s why the games are played.”

Clemson is looking to win the ACC Championship for the ninth time in 11 seasons and ultimately win the program’s first national title since the 2018 season. First, the Tigers will look to accomplish their initial goal of “winning the opener,” when they open the season against LSU at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30 (7:30 p.m., ABC).
