Swinney Comments On Suspension of Ian Schieffelin

CLEMSON — The arrest of Ian Schieffelin made headlines in the middle of August.

Schieffelin was pulled over on August 17 and arrested on suspicion of DUI. On Tuesday, the newly converted tight end released a statement indicating those charges had been dropped and he would plead to reckless driving.

Dabo Swinney also weighed in on the subject on Tuesday during his first weekly press conference of the season.

“He’ll grow from it and it will be a learning experience,” the head coach said from the Smart Family Media Center. “I think we all have a choice. We have all made bad decisions in our lives, but you have a choice on how you apply that. You learn from it, you grow from it, and I don’t have any doubt that he will do just that.”

As a result, Schieffelin will miss No. 4 Clemson’s big season-opening matchup at home against No. 9 LSU on Saturday. However, Swinney noted that the former basketball standout will be back for the Week 2 matchup at home against Troy.

“There are consequences for our actions,” Swinney said. “I hate it for him but he put himself in this situation, and he will have a consequence for it. And he has. Every single day since that day he’s had a consequence. He will miss some time, too, and then move on.”
