CLEMSON — Throughout fall camp, players and coaches have raved about Clemson’s running back room.
While Adam Randall seems to be firmly cemented atop the depth chart, there is no doubt some of the other players in that room are going to have their own opportunities. While true freshman Gideon Davidson has received a lot of attention from the fan base, David Eziomume is one of the backs making his presence felt.
While Randall may be the guy who runs out there first when No. 4 Clemson opens up the season at home against No. 9 LSU on Saturday night, expect Eziomume to have some early opportunities.
“I think it is a good group,” offensive coordinator Garrett Riley said on Tuesday from the Smart Family Media Center. “They are going to have plenty of opportunity.”
After appearing in five games while redshirting last season, Eziomume showed a lot of progress in the spring, culminating in a spring game performance that saw him lead the team in rushing yards. Once fall camp kicked into gear, the second-year back picked up right where he left off.
With the season opener just a few days away, Eziomume now looks ready to make his mark on the Tigers’ running game.
“Just more mature, just from a sense of knowing what to do and doing it more consistently,” Riley said. “He had to really grow in that part of his game, and I feel like he’s definitely taken a huge step since spring football. He’s improved a lot.”
Eziomume signed with Clemson as part of the 2024 recruiting class. Despite one recruiting service ranking him as high as the fifth-best back in the class, he didn’t garner some of the attention as some of the other highly-ranked backs in the class did.
However, Clemson noticed. After posting a 10.89 in the 100-meter during his high school days, Eziomume’s speed is what sticks out for many. He is far more than that, though.
Standing 6-foot and weighing 215 pounds, Eziomume also brings a level of physicality to the position, and for the coaches, that has been what’s been really standing out.
“He certainly brings some violence to that position group,” Riley added. “That is what you love about EZ. He is going to play full speed and he is going to he is going to have bad intentions. That is the kind of style he is.”
