Tigers, Gamecocks Battle in 0-0 Draw

CLEMSON – For a fourth consecutive year, the Clemson women’s soccer team tied No. 12 South Carolina Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, as the rivals battled for what became a 0-0 stalemate.

“This was a good soccer game tonight,” Clemson head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “It was two good teams who got better from the game. We are a young team, and we took a good step today.”

Though the Tigers (1-1-2) and the Gamecocks (4-0-1) both had opportunities to knock in goals and potentially end a tying streak that has lasted nearly half of a decade, swarming defenses for both teams made sure the crowd at Riggs Field could not erupt with any emotion, joy or despair in Clemson’s home opener.

The first period quickly morphed into a defensive skirmish, with only two combined shots-on-goal from the Tigers and Gamecocks. Each team was awarded a free kick for a foul, but neither offense could capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Clemson’s Jolie Jenkins nearly knocked in a right-footed, bottom-center goal in the 22’, but South Carolina keeper Christina Tsaousis blocked it for her first save of the evening.

Clemson keeper Addy Holgorsen saved a bottom-center attempt by South Carolina’s Reagan Schubach in the 30 minute, and another in the 58 minute to keep the Gamecocks off of the scoreboard.

The rivals split possessions evenly in the first 45 minute, as Clemson edged out 53 percent of time on offense. In the second period, it was split at 50 percent for each team.

In the second period, each team recorded another shot on target, but relentless defense kept Clemson fans at Riggs Field from both cheers and agony. Clemson was awarded two free kicks in the second period after two South Carolina players earned unsporting penalties.

Clemson finished with five corner kick opportunities to South Carolina’s seven, and five fouls to the Gamecocks’ eight.

With the draw, Clemson has not lost to South Carolina in women’s soccer in the seven most recent meetings.

“We challenged ourselves. We opened the season on the road, which wasn’t an easy travel and that is to test a younger group. We then come back and play a big rival like South Carolina. Credit to our kids who took in information during training, went out to execute and showed that we were better than the previous game.”
