Clemson 10 LSU 3: Halftime Analysis

CLEMSON — We have a good one here at Death Valley, as fourth-ranked Clemson leads ninth-ranked LSU 10-3 at the half. The Tigers stopped LSU on 4th and 2 at the Clemson 15-yard line with just 15 seconds left in the half. to preserve the seven-point lead.

– Cade Klubnik and the offense mostly sputtered until a touchdown drive late in the second quarter. The Tigers converted two fourth downs on the drive, including on the scoring play that saw Adam Randall run it in from one yard out behind true freshman Brayden Jacobs, who was in at left tackle. Klubnik had a couple of key runs that helped keep the drive alive.

– After totaling just 36 yards of offense in the opening quarter, the unit responded with 75 in the second. 50 of those came through the air. Klubnik is 6-of-12 for 91 yards.

– Clemson is just 1-of-6 on 3rd down, while converting twice on 4th down. LSU is 1-of-5 on 3rd down and failed to convert late in the half on their only fourth down attempt. It was a huge stop for the defense.

– Tom Allen’s unit has held LSU’s high-powered passing attack to just three first-half points. That has to be considered a win. However, LSU has moved the ball some. Clemson has also forced two LSU turnovers, turning one into three points.

-Will Heldt recorded the first sack of the season early on in the third quarter. It came at a crucial moment, with LSU driving. The Bayou Bengals would have to settle for the field goal.

– Clemson’s new look running game has been stuck in neutral much of the first half. The Tigers’ running backs have had very little room to run. Adam Randall hasn’t had much room at all to operate. He also missed a blitzing PJ Woodland, which resulted in a sack of Klubnik.

– The Tigers are averaging just 1.3 yards per carry. Credit to LSU, they’ve come in with a good plan, executing some well-timed run blitzes. At the same time, the Clemson offensive line can be better at opening some running lanes.

– The crowd has been a factor, forcing LSU into two procedural penalties so far, and forcing the offense to burn a couple of timeouts due to not being able to communicate.

– Star wideout Antonio Williams left the game after pulling up short on the second offensive possession. He went to the locker room and has not returned.

– Khalil Barnes, who has been battling a hamstring, was shaken up late in the half.
