Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney joined SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt to preview the No. 4 Tigers’ Week 1 showdown against the No. 9 LSU Tigers on ABC.
Swinney shared his message to his players ahead of the highly anticipated matchup at Clemson’s Death Valley, which is set to kick off around 7:30 p.m.
“It’s an opener, it’s a preseason top-10 matchup. Nobody really knows who anybody is right now,” Swinney said. “But it’s fun. It’s special. I think for us, it’s not coach speak – we really try to create and instill the mentality that every game’s the biggest game of the year. Next week, if you don’t think the Troy game is big, let’s just go lose it. You’ll find out – I’ll be back on your show for the bad reason. So, they’re all big. But certainly this one’s got a lot of juice to it because it’s an opener, and both teams have a lot of experience on their teams, guys that have been successful in college football. But for me, sometimes you can try to do too much, especially in openers. But let’s just do what we’ve been doing. These games usually come down to the very basic things, the fundamental stuff. It’s a few plays, and that’s what we have to focus on.
“I always just tell them, don’t let the magnitude of the moment be greater than the pleasure of the moment. In our sport, we work all year for 12 days. We get 12 days. If you get anything after that, you earned it. So, this one of those 12. It’s fun, and let’s don’t let any type of external stuff make the moment bigger than it is. It’s just football. These guys are really good at football. Let’s go play the game, and then from there, you learn, you get better and you try to go win the next one, just keep rolling, try to stack them up.”
