Swinney’s Sunday Injury Update on Williams, Barnes

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media via Zoom on Sunday evening following his fourth-ranked Tigers’ 17-10 loss to No. 9 LSU in the season opener for both teams at Clemson’s Death Valley on Saturday night.

Swinney was asked for the latest injury update on star wide receiver Antonio Williams and starting safety Khalil Barnes.

Both Williams and Barnes left Saturday’s game with injuries and did not return.

Williams was injured on the second play of Clemson’s second possession. He pulled up on a deep pass to T.J. Moore to the end zone. Before the play was over, Williams grabbed his hamstring on his right leg. He went into the tent and was in there for a few minutes before heading out and going to the locker room.

Barnes went down on the field late in the second quarter after extending and almost nabbing an interception. He dropped down and called for trainers shortly after the play before walking off the field under his own power. Prior to Saturday, Barnes missed a substantial amount of time during fall camp dealing with what Swinney described as a “minor injury.”

On Sunday evening, Swinney was asked if he could elaborate any on Williams’ and Barnes’ injury status.

“We’ll see where they are between now and tomorrow, and the next couple days in practice, and then we’ll go from there,” Swinney said.

Last season, in his third year at Clemson, Williams recorded career highs with 75 receptions, 904 receiving yards and 11 receiving touchdowns across 14 games (all starts) en route to first-team All-ACC honors.

Williams, who was a freshman All-American in 2022, entered this season with 153 career receptions for 1,732 yards and 17 touchdowns. He had caught at least one pass in each of the 33 previous games he appeared in while at Clemson, but that streak ended Saturday night, as Williams did not record a reception before exiting the game with his injury.

Barnes has been a staple on the back end of the Tigers’ defense the past two seasons. He burst onto the scene during his debut season in 2023, earning a starting role and freshman All-American honors after registering 41 tackles, five tackles for loss, six pass breakups, a team-high three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one sack. He also added a fumble recovery that he returned 42 yards for a touchdown. He was the first Clemson player in the Swinney era to record multiple forced fumbles and multiple interceptions in a freshman season.

Last season, Barnes finished with 60 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and a team-high four interceptions. It was the first time since 2019 that a Tiger registered four picks in a single season.

Clemson returns to action when it hosts Troy next Saturday with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
