Swinney Explains why Klubnik, Offense Struggled

CLEMSON — Saturday was not a good night for the Clemson offense.

The fourth-ranked Tigers managed just 261 total yards in their 17-10 loss to No. 9 LSU at Memorial Stadium. They ran the football for just 31 yards, their worst output in a home game in 18 years.

They were 3-for-13 on third down and 2-for-4 on fourth down, 1-for-2 in the red zone and averaged just 4.5 yards per play.

“We have to call it and commit to it, and when we do, we have to execute properly,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said during his conference call with the media on Sunday. “That is not just the offensive line, that’s the quarterback, the running backs. We had a nice deep play, but we had a bust on one of our backs, so it all goes hand in hand.”

As Clemson tries to fix its offense for its Week 2 matchup against Troy, the road to redemption must begin at quarterback where Swinney said Cade Klubnik did not play well.

The senior completed just 19 of 38 passes for 230 yards, as he struggled to find any rhythm, as well as missed on a few reads that led to negative plays or turnover.

Klubnik especially struggled with LSU’s blitzes, where there were built in hot-route opportunities that he failed to execute.

“He did not play well. I can’t sugar coat it,” Swinney said. “He will be the first one to tell you. There were plenty (hot routes) there, and he just, for whatever the reason, got rattled in the game and started scrambling when he did not need to.”

When he went over the film, Swinney noticed Klubnik was leaving the pocket when he did not need to and was not putting his eyes on the right things.

“Again, sometimes when you have not played live ball for a while, all of sudden you miss on a couple of plays and you start trying to do a little too much,” Swinney said. “But he will be fine. He is much more capable than what he played, and he will respond, I promise you.”

Clemson and Troy will kick off at 3:30 p.m., next Saturday.
