National Outlet Grades Clemson’s Season-Opening Loss

This national outlet handed out a grade to No. 4 Clemson for its season-opening defeat against ninth-ranked LSU on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

CBS Sports published a Week 1 report card, and Clemson received a ‘C-’ grade after suffering a 17-10 loss to LSU.

Clemson has now lost three season openers in a row and four of its last five season openers. Clemson was 12-1 in season openers in head coach Dabo Swinney’s first 13 years.

“Clemson is just 1-4 in season openers over the last five years and has been held to 10 points or less in all four losses,” CBS Sports’ David Cobb wrote. “The Tigers had no running game, iffy pass protection and no answers for LSU’s suddenly strong defense. An early injury to veteran star Antonio Williams also didn’t help a disappointing showing from what was touted as one of the nation’s top receiver groups.”

Clemson has now lost four straight games to SEC teams and is 3-8 in its last 11 such contests.

With the win, LSU snapped its five-game losing streak to open a season. Its previous win to start a season came at Texas in 2019, its last national championship season.

CBS Sports gave LSU an ‘A’ grade after going into Clemson’s Death Valley and coming away with the victory.

“LSU’s nightmarish run of five straight season-opening losses finally ended in unexpected fashion,” Cobb wrote. “It was the Tigers’ defense — not their high-powered offense — that led the charge. Clemson totaled just 261 total yards and was shut out in the second half. Clemson’s 31 rushing yards were its fewest in a home game since 2007.”

Clemson returns to action when it hosts Troy next Saturday with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
