CLEMSON — Clemson tight end Ian Schieffelin will be available Saturday when No. 8 Clemson hosts Troy at Memorial Stadium.
The former Clemson basketball star, who transitioned from basketball to football in the summer, missed last week’s loss to LSU due to a suspension. Schieffelin was suspended after his Aug. 17 arrest for what initially was a driving under the influence charge.
However, Schieffelin was able to plea the charge down to a lesser offense of reckless driving. According to the Greenville News’ Derrian Carter, Schieffelin will pay $600 to the Community Foundation of Greater Clemson and must prepare and present 12 one-hour presentations to middle- or high-school children about drug and alcohol awareness and the consequences of those decisions.
“He’ll grow from it and it will be a learning experience,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said prior to the LSU game. “I think we all have a choice. We have all made bad decisions in our lives, but you have a choice on how you apply that. You learn from it, you grow from it, and I don’t have any doubt that he will do just that.”
With his arrest, plea deal and suspension behind him, Schieffelin can now turn his attention to playing football, which is what he was doing before his lack of judgement on Aug. 17.
“He is working his way back,” Swinney said after practice on Wednesday. “He had a really good camp. He has made a ton of progress. So, he is just one of our tight ends that is waiting for on opportunity and working for an opportunity, and preparing every day to get better and better.”
Schieffelin’s move from basketball to football was the fill-good-story of the summer, which was tainted a little bit after the incident that occurred in the earlier morning hours of Aug. 17 on Hwy. 123 in Clemson.
“There are consequences for our actions,” Swinney said. “I hate it for him but he put himself in this situation, and he will have a consequence for it. And he has. Every single day since that day he’s had a consequence. He will miss some time, too, and then move on.”
Schieffelin will officially move on this Saturday when the Tigers host Troy. The game will be televised (3:30 p.m.) on the ACCN.
