Significant Change Coming to Transfer Portal Windows

The college football landscape has shifted once again.

The Division 1 Football Subdivision Committee has recommended a change that would remove the spring Transfer Portal window.

The current system features two windows. One that opens in December, and one that opens in April after spring practices have mostly wrapped up. The change would eliminate the April window, giving players just one window each year.

Under the new recommendation, undergraduate and postgraduate FBS student-athletes would be allowed to enter the Transfer Portal between January 2 and January 11. This is notable because it takes place after the early signing period in December.

This new, single 10-day window would replace the current structure, in which football student-athletes may enter the portal during a 20-day period in December and a 10-day period in April.

The Division I Administrative Committee must approve the changes before they can take effect. The vote is expected to occur before October 1.

Over the offseason, Clemson signed three transfers, with all three signing during the December signing period. While the Tigers have yet to sign a player from the portal during the spring window, the program has seen some leave at that time. One of the most recent examples was cornerback Tavoy Feagin, who entered the portal after spring practice wrapped in April.
