Clemson D Needs to Clean Things up Before Ga. Tech

CLEMSON — Saturday’s win over Troy was a good lesson for No. 12 Clemson, as it gets set to travel to Atlanta this week to face undefeated Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0) are coming off a 47-point victory over Gardner-Webb at Bobby Dodd Stadium, a game in which they threw for 457 yards. However, Tech quarterback Haynes King did play due to a “nagging lower body injury.”

What does that mean for Clemson? That is a good question.

King is more of a running quarterback, evident by his 157 yards and two TDs at Colorado on opening weekend.

Backup Aaron Philo made his first career start and struggled early against Gardner-Webb, turning the ball over on the first two possessions. But he bounced back to throw for 373 yards and a touchdown, while 11 different wideouts caught at least one pass.

Philo finished his afternoon 21-for-28 passing with one touchdown.

The Tigers (1-1) now have to get ready for both quarterbacks, which is not easy to do, since they are so different. Philo ran for just 14 yards on three carries against Gardner-Webb.

“That was a good game for us going into this game,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “It is a little different because they are going to run their quarterback a lot more than the one we just played, but there are a lot of similarities from a discipline standpoint especially with your eyes. There is a lot of misdirection in this offense.”

Tom Allen’s defense held the Trojans to 78 yards on the ground, but they threw for 223 yards on 19 of 31 passing, including a 44-yard touchdown pass down the sideline to Tray Taylor.

They caught the Tigers napping on a couple of other plays, as well.

“They got us on the one throwback, so we have to do a good job of that and make sure that we do not get lull to sleep,” Swinney said. “They got outside of us a couple of times on some of their boots.

“We turned the quarterback (loose) one time, but they did not throw it to him, but we put that on tape, so we have to always be aware of the threat of the throwback. Sometimes when you are an aggressive defense and have guys that fly to the ball like our guys do, then you can be susceptible to that if you are not really disciplined on the backside.

“So, we have to learn from that.”

Clemson better learn quickly. It will play Georgia Tech at noon on Saturday on ESPN.
