ESPN’s lead College Football Playoff insider assessed how the CFP selection committee could stack the top teams in the country after Week 2 of the season.
ESPN’s Heather Dinich updated where things currently stand in the 12-team playoff picture and gave her latest prediction of the selection committee’s top 12, if that ranking came out today.
Following Clemson’s 17-10 loss to LSU in Week 1, Clemson was No. 12 in Dinich’s projection of the CFP top 12.
Now, after Clemson’s struggles during Saturday’s 27-16 win over Troy at Death Valley, the Tigers dropped entirely out of Dinich’s new CFP top 12 projection – which negatively impacts LSU’s resume while also helping Ohio State, as she pointed out.
“Ohio State also benefited this week from Clemson’s struggles against Troy, because it takes some of the shine off LSU’s season-opening road win against Clemson,” Dinich wrote. “While Clemson struggled, Texas reasserted itself. The selection committee members would include those results in their discussions as they determine who had the better Week 1 win. With Clemson dropping out of this week’s top 12, that honor now goes to Ohio State.”
After Ohio State at No. 1, Miami is No. 2 in Dinich’s early projection of the CFP selection committee’s top 12, followed by LSU at No. 3. Florida State is No. 4, with Oregon rounding out the top five.
Clemson will host FSU on Nov. 8 at Memorial Stadium.
The selection committee will announce its first of six rankings on Tuesday, Nov. 4. The final selection committee rankings of the 2025 season will be released on Selection Day, Sunday, Dec. 7. At that time, the committee will also announce the 12-team playoff bracket pairings and game sites.
