On Monday, Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key provided an update on the injury status of star quarterback Haynes King ahead of Saturday’s game against Clemson.
“[King] is doing well. We’ll make decisions once we get into practice. He’s expected to practice this week,” Key said in an interview with radio station 680 The Fan.
“It’s one of those things that was right up until game time beforehand. He’d gone through all the pregame warmups and everything, but when you got something that could be completely healed in a matter of a short time, and if you do something else to it, now it’s four to six weeks. Look, I’m gonna listen to the doctors, I’m gonna do what they say when it comes to that because that’s the priority when it comes to our players.”
King did not play in Georgia Tech’s Week 2 win over Gardner-Webb. The redshirt senior went through pregame warmups, but was ruled out before kickoff with a “nagging lower body injury” that bothered him throughout the week.
With King out, redshirt freshman Aaron Philo made his first career start and went 21-for-28 passing for 373 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
In the Yellow Jackets’ season-opening win at Colorado on Aug. 29, King completed 13 of 20 passes for 143 yards with an interception and ran 19 times for 156 yards with three rushing touchdowns.
King is in his third year at Georgia Tech following three years at Texas A&M.
Last season, despite missing two games and being limited in three more due to a midseason injury, King put together a historic season with the Yellow Jackets. He started 11 games, and though he was limited in the passing game for nearly half the season, he completed an ACC and school-record 72.9% of his attempts for 2,114 yards and 14 touchdowns, while throwing just two interceptions. He also ran 125 times for 587 yards and 11 touchdowns, giving him 2,701 yards of total offense and 25 touchdowns responsible for.
King became the first NCAA Division I FBS player in at least the last 69 years (since 1956) with 2,000 passing yards, 10 touchdown passes, a 70% completion percentage and two or fewer interceptions in a season.
Saturday’s game between No. 12 Clemson (1-1) and Georgia Tech (2-0) at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta is set to kick off at noon and will be televised on ESPN. It marks the ACC opener for both teams.
