4-Star LB Calls Clemson ‘One of One’ After Recent Visit

One of the top linebackers in the 2027 recruiting class made his way back to Clemson for the Tigers’ season opener against LSU.

Four-star Jalaythan Mayfield (Lincolnton, NC) was back on campus for the first time since visiting for the Underclass Experience back in March. It was his first time experiencing a game day at Clemson.

“Really, the crowd and just the atmosphere,” Mayfield told The Clemson Insider regarding what stood out. “It was like one of one. You can not copy that. It was just different. It was a good experience for sure.”

While Mayfield says he hears from linebackers coach Ben Boulware fairly regularly, the visit gave the two an opportunity to catch up face-to-face.

“We talk often. Not every day, but weekly,” Mayfield said. “I sat down and talked to him for a while. He was pretty busy with the big game and all.”

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound blue-chip talent currently holds more than 20 offers, with Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and South Carolina being just a few of those schools.

While Clemson has yet to pull the trigger, Mayfield is certainly on the Tigers’ radar.

“I know that they like to know that their guys are all in,” he added. “I respect that. I am just waiting out the process and to see how things go.”

“It’s a lot to say about your character to be offered by them. The type of player they want in their system has great characteristics. It says a lot about your character and your play because they want the best on their team. And they have produced great players in the NFL and the college level.”

Through his first three games, Mayfield is averaging 12 stops per game and two tackles for loss per contest. Rivals ranks him No. 58 overall, No. 4 among all linebackers and No. 2 in the state of North Carolina.

Mayfield was at South Carolina on Saturday, and he plans to visit LSU this weekend. He will be at Georgia later this month when the Dawgs host Alabama.

While he has yet to firm up a timeline for making a decision, he is hoping to have one made before the start of his senior season next year. For now, he is choosing to take things slow.

“I am still trying to keep it neutral,” Mayfield said. “I am still trying to get to know all the coaching staffs and all the schools and what they have to offer.
