Saban Seems to Throw Swinney Under the Bus

During Saturday’s edition of ESPN’s College GameDay, the analysts weighed in on Clemson coach Dabo Swinney’s viral rant earlier this week.

“If they want me gone, they’re tired of winning, they can send me on my way, because that’s all we’ve done is win,” Swinney said. “We’ve won this league eight out of the last 10 years. Is that not good?”

“Hey, listen, if Clemson’s tired of winning, they can send me on my way. But I’m going to go somewhere else and coach,” Swinney added. “I ain’t going to the beach. Hell, I’m 55. I’ve got a long way to go.”

Legendary former Alabama coach and current ESPN college football analyst Nick Saban seemed to throw Swinney under the bus for his comments, in the current transfer portal and NIL era.

“Dabo needs to look at what he needs to do in his program to make his program continually be successful,” Saban said. “Do you have to change the portal, do you have to change name, image and likeness? The game has changed. You need to change with it, otherwise you’re not going to put yourself in the same position other people are and having a chance to be successful.”

Saban, a seven-time national championship coach who led Alabama to six national titles, added that Swinney “created the success” at Clemson — “very similar to the way we created a standard and expectation at Alabama.”

“But then you’ve got to keep climbing that mountain because people expect you to live up to it,” Saban said. “And you’re only as good as your last play. You’re only as good as your last game. When you’re in competition and you’ve got to look at the next challenge as an opportunity to continue to grow and develop.”
