Swinney Talks Being Visibly Emotional on ESPN Broadcast Postgame

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was visibly emotional following Saturday’s 34-21 loss to Syracuse at Death Valley.

The ESPN broadcast showed Swinney, appearing to be teary-eyed during the postgame alma mater after the Tigers dropped to 1-3 and 0-2 in ACC play with the loss to the Orange.

During his postgame press conference, Swinney was asked about ESPN catching him being emotional after the game and what was going through his mind.

“I mean, disappointed. Painful. I hurt. I’m human. I’m not a cyborg,” Swinney said. “This is my life, man. I mean, I’ve been here 23 years. I love this place. I mean, I give this place the very best I got every single day. Every day. There’s never been a day that I haven’t given Clemson every ounce of everything I have. I hurt. I mean, I’ve invested my life here. And when I don’t get the job done, I’m responsible, and I feel the pain. It’s not just my pain — I feel everybody’s pain. But that comes with my job, and I don’t run from that, at all.”

“Again, I’ve been in these situations many times,” Swinney continued. “I’ve had a lot of great days, and this is a very, very low day. But I also know that we’ll get through it, and there will be a lot more great days. Nobody wants to hear that in this moment, but that’s what drives me is being able to look back at different moments in my life and my career, certainly, and you got through it, you got better. There’s a lot of great days. So, I just hurt. I hurt. I hurt, obviously just because I take pride in what I do. I hurt for our team, I hurt for our fans, and certainly feel that.”

After falling to 1-3 for the first time since 2004 and 0-2 in ACC play for the first time since 2010, Clemson has an open date next weekend before returning to action against North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Saturday, Oct. 4.
