Clemson’s defense got gashed in the first half of Saturday’s game against Syracuse, and that might be an understatement.
The Orange (2-1) scored three touchdowns, added a field goal and led the Tigers (1-2), 24-14, after two quarters at Death Valley.
Syracuse possessed the ball six times and amassed a whopping 303 total yards (180 passing, 123 rushing) and 18 first downs. Syracuse scored on each of its first four drives before Clemson finally forced punts on the fifth and sixth possessions.
The Orange averaged 6.9 yards per play, 11.3 yards per completion and 6.5 yards per rush.
“That’s about as bad a start defensively as I’ve seen,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said during his halftime interview on ESPN.
“We’ve got to stop the run. It’s as simple as that. They just went through us. Now, we did get two punts, so it was good to see us settle in. We got a couple stops right there.”
Here’s a look at Syracuse’s drive chart:
TD (7 plays, 75 yards)
FG (11 plays, 49 yards)
TD (9 plays, 75 yards)
TD (8 plays, 80 yards)
Punt (5 plays, 31 yards)
Punt (5 plays, 18 yards)
It certainly wasn’t a pretty performance for a Clemson defense that came into Saturday’s game allowing 337.7 yards per game (73rd in FBS), 226.7 passing yards per game (94th), 111 yards rushing per game (50th) and 19 points per game (53rd).
The Tigers, who entered Saturday’s game as 17.5-point favorites, will try to tighten things up and muster up a rally in the second half.
