Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his Zoom conference call with the media on Monday evening following last Saturday’s loss to Syracuse.
Swinney was asked about the ACC fining Syracuse for faking injuries in the Orange’s 34-21 victory over the Tigers at Death Valley.
On Monday, the ACC announced it is issuing a $25,000 fine and public reprimand to Syracuse for faking injuries, declaring its actions “unethical and contrary to the spirit of the rules.”
“That’s the first I’ve heard about that. … I don’t have any comment on that,” Swinney said Monday evening. “That’s for the officials and all that stuff.”
In a statement, the ACC said Syracuse’s action “violated the spirit of the injury timeout and fair play and was done in a way to circumvent the new injury timeout rule to avoid the team being charged a timeout.”
The ACC said the actions by two players and a coach, with 9:25 remaining in the fourth quarter, “were a clear attempt to gain an unmerited advantage by stopping the game in order to secure an injury timeout.”
Swinney reiterated that he hadn’t heard about the ACC fining Syracuse before being asked about it, and stressed that the Orange “competed their butts off” and “deserved” to win the game.
“I thought Syracuse competed their butts off and I thought Coach Fran [Brown] did a great job. … They earned it. They deserved it. They earned it. They were the better team. They were the tougher team and executed better,” Swinney said.
“So, like I said, that’s the first I’ve heard of that. I’ll let other people be the judge of all that stuff.”
