Meyer Rips Tar Heels to Shreds

Clemson and North Carolina will meet next weekend in a game that will feature two of the ACC’s worst teams early in the season.

Back in the summer, so many were looking forward to Dabo Swinney facing off with NFL great Bill Belichick, but with the two teams currently a combined 0-5 against Power-4 programs, the matchup has now turned into a game featuring two teams desperately in need of a victory.

Three-time national title-winning head coach Urban Meyer recently broke down what he’s seen from Belichick’s Tar Heels on The Triple Option podcast.

“I wanted to do a little homework and I watched some tape on it,” said Meyer. “They’re worse on tape than I thought they would be.”

Belichick completely overhauled the North Carolina roster over the offseason, but according to Meyer, it has not made the team any better.

“You can say, well, we have really bad players,” Meyer said. “Okay, you brought in 70 new people. But I’m seeing things that just – you know, misfits on defense. For the listener, that means – as a linebacker takes on a block, he’s supposed to send that to the unblocked safety. So, if the safety’s inside, I’m taking on the blocker with my inside shoulder to force it to him. It’s not happening.”

Meyer’s critique of the offense was even worse.

“Then, on the offensive side, it’s a trainwreck. I don’t think it ends well. I hate to say that.”

The talk then shifted to Dabo Swinney and Clemson’s 1-3 start, with Meyer claiming the Tigers’ head coach’s seat is not getting warm.

“Dabo goes when Dabo wants to go,” Meyer said. “That one’s a done deal. I think he’ll adapt a little bit. He made the comment that he is going to coach for (a long time). Well, at some point, why wouldn’t you go enjoy your life a little bit? So, I don’t know. They’re not going to let him go.”

Clemson and North Carolina will meet on October 4 in Chapel Hill. The game is scheduled for a noon kick and will be televised by ESPN. The Tigers opened as a 12.5-point favorite.
