ESPN Analyst on Clemson as One of Biggest Disappointments

On his Always College Football show, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on what we’ve learned after five weeks of college football, including the biggest disappointments so far.

Unsurprisingly, McElroy named Clemson (1-3, 0-2 ACC) as one of those huge disappointments, along with Florida and Penn State.

The Tigers, of course, entered this season ranked No. 4 in the AP Poll and were expected by many to be a national championship contender, with multiple national analysts – including McElroy – even ranking Clemson as the preseason No. 1 team.

“You’re probably not going to be that surprised to know that Clemson, to me, has been one of the biggest disappointments of the season,” McElroy said. “I had them preseason No. 1. Totally missed on this one completely. Really did.”

McElroy gave his assessment of a Clemson team that currently ranks 73rd nationally in total defense (362.0 yards per game allowed) and 116th in scoring offense (19.8 points per game).

“I look at their quarterback in Cade Klubnik, who I thought was going to be one of the best quarterbacks in college football. It hasn’t materialized this year,” McElroy said. “I thought defensively, they’d be able to disrupt the opposing quarterback’s timing and rhythm. That hasn’t happened as often as I had hoped. They haven’t been very balanced offensively. But I just think, across the board, they’re just a little out of sorts.”

In his preseason College Football Playoff predictions, McElroy had Clemson making the national championship game.

Fast forward to now, and the Tigers are out of the playoff picture entirely after getting off to their worst start under head coach Dabo Swinney, and the worst since the 2004 season.

“Can Clemson get back and end up finishing with a decent record? Perhaps,” McElroy said. “But they are a far way away from where I thought they’d be coming into the season, knowing the returning production that they had on both sides of the ball.”
