Swinney Gives Update on Injured Running Backs

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his weekly Sunday evening conference call with the media following the Tigers’ 38-10 win at North Carolina on Saturday.

Swinney gave injury updates on a pair of running backs – redshirt sophomores Jay Haynes and Jarvis Green.

Swinney said the Tigers are planning to medically redshirt Haynes this year, “unless something drastic happens.”

The Tigers lost Haynes to a torn ACL in last year’s ACC Championship Game. Then, he suffered a quad strain in fall camp that set him back. He has not played so far this season.

“He’s still coming. And honestly, at this point, unless something drastic happens, we’ll probably try to get a medical year back on him,” Swinney said. “We’ll see. He was trending really good, and then he had the quad. So, that set him back. But he’s doing everything he’s supposed to do. So, feel good about where we are right now, and if we can keep those guys healthy, then I don’t see us bringing him back for a couple of games. So, we’ll just see how that all plays out.”

As for Green, Swinney said he is “doing really well” in his recovery from a foot injury that he sustained in fall camp, which required surgery. According to Swinney, Green is setting himself up to potentially return late this season.

“Jarvis is actually doing really well,” Swinney said. “I’ve been really pleased with how he’s progressing, for sure. So, maybe he’s a guy down the stretch, we’ll see, postseason or whatever. But got a long way to go to get to that.”

After appearing in just two games while redshirting in 2023, Green managed to get into nine games last season, despite dealing with multiple injuries. He carried the ball nine times for 53 yards, averaging right at 6 yards per attempt.

In last year’s loss to Texas in the opening round of the College Football Playoff, Green finally got a chance to show what he could do. On one of the biggest stages, he caught two passes out of the backfield, including a 25-yard touchdown, the first of his career.

As for Haynes, before he tore his ACL in last year’s ACC Championship Game, he rushed 43 times for 295 yards and three touchdowns and caught seven passes for 32 yards in 150 offensive snaps over 13 games.

During his first year at Clemson in 2023, Haynes played 14 offensive snaps in three games while redshirting. He rushed six times for 35 yards with a touchdown and produced two catches for 20 yards and another touchdown.
