CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dabo Swinney said he wanted his Clemson team to have some fun, something it has not had too much of before Saturday.
Swinney kept his word.
On the first play from scrimmage in Saturday’s 38-10 win over North Carolina, the Tigers called a trick play, as quarterback Cade Klubnilk threw a backwards pass to wide receiver Antonio Brown, who then threw a deep ball down the near side to T.J. Moore, who caught the perfect pass and raced 75 yards for a touchdown.
One play, one touchdown. The Tigers were having fun.
“We talked about it for a couple of days,” Williams said. “I was like, ‘First play, Coach? I don’t know. You trust me that much?’ I was a little nervous.”
Williams was nervous because he said his throw to Moore was his best of the week. Regardless, it worked, and it got the Clemson offense rolling.
“It was awesome,” Klubnik said. “We have been practicing that play for the last week and a half, maybe since last Wednesday. “We put it in, and obviously, Tony has an arm on him. It was definitely a big part of our plan. We did a lot of good stuff off of it.”
The Tigers (2-3, 1-2 ACC) used the play to score on each of their first four possessions at Kenan Stadium, while racking up 367 total yards in the first half. Clemson’s 28 first-quarter points were more than any points the Tigers scored in any of the first four games.
“It was great to come right out of the gate and score,” Klubnik said. “It got us ahead of the chains. It was great. We responded really well this week. I am just real proud of our guys. If you would have come to practice this week and watched us, you would have no idea what our record was.”
Williams’ pass was his fourth of his career. The Clemson wide receiver is now 4-for-4 for 143 yards and two TDs.
“Somebody told me I am the most efficient quarterback in Clemson history,” Williams said with a smile. “We are going to keep that rolling.”
Klubnik was not too bad either. The senior completed 22 of 24 passes for 254 yards and 4 TDs, as he threw two scoring passes to running back Adam Randall and tight end Christian Bentancur.
“I feel like I just played like myself,” Klubnik said. “I feel like more than anything, I was not special. I just managed the game really well. The plan that we had was great. I made some good plays.”
And it all started with one play. A play that had the whole team having fun.
