Swinney on Lawrence: ‘That’s the Game He Needed’

Dabo Swinney wanted to go to sleep on Monday night, but he couldn’t.

Clemson’s head coach had to stay up to watch former Clemson stars Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in a thrilling Monday Night Football matchup.

“I was trying to go to sleep, and I couldn’t go to sleep,” Swinney said during his weekly Tuesday press conference. “I was so happy for Trevor. Just awesome. I hate it for Andy Reid because I love Andy Reid, too. It’s a long trip home when you lose a tough game like that. They haven’t had quite the start that they want, but they’ll keep playing. I thought they played well.

“But I was so happy for Trevor. Travis played awesome. Great to see him have a big game. He’s having a great year. They’re getting him the ball.”

Lawrence’s wild run in the waning seconds propelled the Jaguars to a 31-28 win over Mahomes and the Chiefs.

On his 26th birthday, Lawrence went 18-of-25 passing for 221 yards and had two touchdown runs, as well as a touchdown pass. He also led the Jaguars in rushing yards with 54.

Lawrence wasn’t perfect, with one lost fumble and an interception, but he came through in the clutch and made a couple of stellar throws on the game-winning drive – including a pinpoint 33-yard pass to Brian Thomas Jr. along the right sideline, as well as a 13-yard pass to Dyami Brown on the other side of the field.

Then, of course, Lawrence scored the game-winning 1-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds remaining. He tripped after his right foot got stepped on by his right guard and fell to the ground, but managed to get up, break a tackle and scramble into the end zone.

“Trevor – that’s the game he needed,” Swinney said. “Monday Night Football against Mahomes. It’s his birthday. If you’re going to win it, you’re going to have to make some throws in [a tight window] and he did. He made some big-time plays. The throw to the Thomas kid on the side was a heck of a play. The throw over on the left side, that was a great play.

“That was a complete disaster on the last play, getting stepped on, but somehow or another, he got up and was able to get in there. That was the other thing, too – he made some big plays with his legs, which we’ve all seen that. So, I was just really happy for him.”

The Jaguars (4-1) ended an eight-game losing streak against the Chiefs and equaled their win total from a year ago, when they went 4-13.

Under first-year head coach Liam Coen, Jacksonville is currently tied with the Indianapolis Colts for first place in the AFC South. Up next for the Jags is a home game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

“It’s just one of those games. They’re 4-1. That’s a momentum-type game,” Swinney said of the win over the Chiefs.

“But man, Trevor will be the first guy in the building. He’ll be the first guy back at work. He’ll be the first guy grading himself, like, ‘I gotta be better, I gotta this, I gotta that.’ Nothing matters. He won’t be walking around saying we’re 4-1. He’s going to just be focused on trying to win the [next] game.”
