Halftime Analysis: Clemson Up Big On Boston College

After one half of play, the Clemson offense is basically doing what it wants against Boston College, as the Tigers have taken a 34-10 lead into the break.

It has been a fairly efficient and balanced attack, as Clemson has scored on all six possessions. The Tigers have racked up 333 total yards over the first two quarters. The offense has 17 first downs, was 3-of-5 on third down and converted a fourth down attempt.

Halftime Analysis

Cade Starts Fast: Cade Klubnik picked up where he left off in Chapel Hill, hitting on 10 of his first 11 pass attempts. He has completed 18-of-23 for 244 yards and one touchdown. He hit on 12 consecutive passes at one point. For the second game in a row, he is seeing the field well and spreading the ball around. Nine different players caught a pass in that first half.

Klubnik has also been a factor with his legs, rushing for 28 yards and a touchdown. When the defense has to account for him as a runner, it helps open up the offense.

Ground Game: The Tigers came out making it a point to establish the running game. Clemson ran it 11 times in the first quarter alone and is averaging more than five yards per carry. The staff made sure to get backup, Gideon Davidson, involved early.

Antonio Williams has also been involved in the running game, with two carries for 26 yards. One of those was a direct snap that he carried for a big 24-yard gain that helped set up the second touchdown of the night.

Peter Woods has also gotten two carries in short-yardage situations, with the second one resulting in a 2-yard touchdown run, the first of his career.

Getting TEs Involved: Nice to see the TEs being a factor again this week. That was not always the case during the 1-3 start. Olsen Patt-Henry, Christian Bentancur and Josh Sapp have each caught passes in the first half. Sapp’s one catch was a big one, going for 32 yards.

Inconsistent D: After holding BC to a three-and-out on the Eagles’ first possession of the game, the defense just gave up too many chunk plays. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan has already hit on five passes of 15 yards or longer, and running back Turbo Richard already has two runs that have gone 10 yards or more.

The Eagles are 3-of-6 on third down. That number must improve in the second half.

The defense did finally force its first turnover since the Troy game when Sammy Brown forced a fumble on a sack of Lonergan. That turnover was a big one, too, seeing as BC was driving, trying to pull back within seven.

The Tigers also had a couple of senseless penalties on BC’s first touchdown drive. Both came on the same play, a third-down pass attempt that Lonergan threw away. The Eagles ended up with a first down and on the next play ran it in for their first touchdown of the night.
