For the second time this year, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is going against the norm in regards to a road game and what the Tigers are wearing.
The Tigers, who traditionally wear their white jerseys and white pants in true road games, will wear their orange britches tonight when they take on Boston College (7:30, ACCN). Swinney usually reserves the orange pants for a championship game — such as the South Carolina game, ACC Championship Game, bowl game or College Football Playoff Game.
Clemson (2-3, 1-2 ACC) wore their purple jersey over white pants in its loss at Georgia Tech in Week 3. The last time the Tigers wore the orange britches on the road came last year when they lost to Texas in the first round of the CFP.
Swinney began wearing the Tigers’ famous orange britches for championship games starting in 2015. It became an unofficial tradition at Clemson under Swinney.
The last time Clemson wore its orange pants in a true road game that did not have a championship on the line or was a playoff game, came in 2014 at Florida State.
In both cases, Clemson lost the game.
Though the Tigers are not playing for a championship, they are playing for a trophy.
Tonight’s matchup represents the 16th time that Clemson and Boston College will play for the O’Rourke
McFadden Trophy, which the Boston College Gridiron Club began sponsoring in 2008. Clemson has won 14 of the 15 years the trophy has been awarded.
The trophy features a leather helmet replica of those used by Charlie O’Rourke of Boston College and Banks McFadden of Clemson when they competed against each other in the 1940 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. In addition to the trophy presentation, the Boston College Gridiron Club presents a replica leather helmet to the MVP of the winning school in the locker room.
