Klubnik Balls Out at BC, for Most Part

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik balled out in Saturday night’s win at Boston College, for the most part.

Klubnik completed 22 of his 30 passes for 280 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for a score, as the Tigers (3-3, 2-2 ACC) rolled past the Eagles (1-5, 0-4), 41-10, at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Klubnik’s lone blemish of the night was an interception on Clemson’s first possession of the second half. Other than that, it was a strong and sharp performance for the senior signal caller.

“Just really proud of him,” Swinney said of Klubnik after the win over BC. “He was precise. He made some big plays. Had one [play] he’d like to have back, but he really put the ball on the money.”

In the first half alone, Klubnik went 18-of-23 passing for 244 yards and a touchdown pass – an absolute dime to Bryant Wesco Jr. in the end zone for a 38-yard score. He picked up where he left off against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, hitting on 10 of his first 11 pass attempts and hitting on 12 consecutive passes at one point. It marked the second straight game in which Klubnik had a streak of 12 consecutive completions, one shy of his career long of 13.

Klubnik was also a factor with his legs, rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

For the second game in a row, Klubnik saw the field well and spread the ball around. Nine different players caught a pass in the first half with Klubnik distributing the rock.

Klubnik entered Saturday’s game having completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 1,250 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions over the first five games this season. He has now put together two really good performances in a row, as he went 22-of-24 for 254 yards and had four touchdown throws in last Saturday’s win at UNC.

Klubnik was a combined 39-of-46 (84.8 percent) for 495 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in the first halves of Clemson’s last two contests for a pass efficiency rating of 211.0.

Unfortunately for Klubnik, his night came to an end late in the third quarter when he ran the ball, took a big hit and got rolled up on by Boston College defenders. He walked off the field with a limp and was taken out of the game.

“Cade, back-to-back, just amazing games,” Swinney said. “He’s just played awesome these last two games. I’m really proud of him. … He rolled his ankle up. He tried to come back in, but we were just going to see how it was going to go, and we held him. So, hopefully not too bad.”

Klubnik and the Tigers return home to Death Valley next Saturday to take on SMU. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
