Swinney Asked if He Thinks Klubnik Will Play vs. SMU

Following Clemson’s 41-10 win at Boston College on Saturday night, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke more about starting quarterback Cade Klubnik’s ankle injury.

“Hopefully not too bad,” Swinney said.

The Tigers’ senior quarterback got hurt late in the third quarter on a second-and-goal play from the Boston College 9-yard line. On the play, Klubnik ran 6 yards on a designed quarterback run where he took a big hit from a couple of BC defenders with about a minute and a half left in the third quarter.

Klubnik got up limping and was taken out of the game. Christopher Vizzina replaced him at quarterback and threw a fourth-down interception in the end zone to end the Clemson drive.

Swinney discussed what he saw on the play where Klubnik was injured.

“He just got rolled up,” Swinney said. “He’s been kind of nursing a little bit of a sore ankle, anyway. You’ve probably seen it taped up. But he just kind of rolled it up – it just got rolled under him.

“So, he went in [the injury tent]. They untaped him, re-taped him. And like I said, he was ready to go back in. I said, well, let’s just see how CV [Vizzina] does right here, and it’s good for CV to play. It was good for him to go in there and play.”

Klubnik did not return. He finished the game 22-of-30 passing for 280 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception. He also rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Swinney was asked if he thinks Klubnik will play in next Saturday’s game against SMU at Death Valley (3:30 p.m., ACC Network).

“Absolutely!” Swinney said. “Like I said, he was trying to play tonight. He wanted to come back in there. I am sure he will be sore tomorrow. We will have to evaluate him. Y’all will ask me every day how he is doing. I am going to say the same thing. I do not see anything at this point that says he wouldn’t. We will see, I guess.”
