Finebaum Names College Football’s Biggest Disappointment

On The Matt Barrie Show with ESPN’s Matt Barrie and Paul Finebaum, Barrie asked Finebaum to reveal a few midseason superlatives, including the biggest disappointment of the college football campaign thus far.

Finebaum pegged Clemson as the biggest disappointment, other than Penn State.

“I think after Penn State, it’s still Clemson,” Finebaum said. “Because they were top three, top four going in. [Cade] Klubnik looked like a possible Heisman winner. So, there’s just no way you can get around what’s happened there.”

Of course, Clemson opened the season ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25 Poll, with Penn State at No. 2.

Now, neither team is ranked, as both have started 3-3. Penn State is fresh off firing head coach James Franklin after the Nittany Lions suffered a third straight loss this past Saturday. Both the Tigers and Nittany Lions were widely viewed as national title favorites coming into the season.

“There’s a lot of other competitors for it [biggest disappointment],” Finebaum said. “One may have turned the corner [Saturday] in Texas. But those two, Clemson and Penn State, were built for a championship run this year, and neither one will come anywhere near it.”

Following back-to-back wins on the road at North Carolina and Boston College, Clemson returns home to host SMU at Death Valley on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ACC Network).
