New Look Clemson Team Cruises By Presbyterian

CLEMSON — On a team full of newcomers, it was transfer Efrem “Butta” Johnson who sparked the Tigers early as Clemson knocked off Presbyterian 83-44 in exhibition action on Friday night inside Littlejohn Coliseum.

With the Tigers struggling to score early on, Johnson connected on three consecutive three-pointers to help kickstart a 21-2 run that saw Clemson turn a five-point deficit into a 16-point lead, as Brad Brownell’s team took a 35-19 lead into the break.

Five minutes into the second half, and the Tigers were up 49-23, as Carter Wahlin and Jestin Porter hit 3-pointers and Nick Davidson had a powerful dunk. After that, the route was on.

Clemson played 12 different players in the win as Brownell looks to build some depth on his roster. Freshman Trent Steinhour did not play due to an ankle injury.

The Tigers shot 48% from the floor and were 8-of-23 from beyond the arc, while holding PC to just 33% shooting and just 9% from three-point range.

Clemson forced 22 PC turnovers while only committing six.

Jestin Porter had a team-high 15 points and pulled down two rebounds. He shot 6-of-10 from the field. Johnson scored 11 points, all coming in the first half. He finished 3-for-4 from three-point land.

Nick Davidson had 12 points, with 10 coming in the second half, on 5-of-7 shooting. He also had four boards.

Carter Welling scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting, while also pulling down a team-high eight boards.

True freshman Zac Foster finished with 10 points, including two three-point baskets, to go along with one rebound and one assist.

RJ Godfrey finished with seven points, despite tweaking an ankle in the first half. After having it retaped, he did return but only played nine minutes, all coming in the opening half.

True freshman Chase Thompson had a really good night, scoring eight points with two rebounds and three assists.

Clemson will begin the regular season at home on November 3 against New Hampshire. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
