Extra Year ‘In Works’ for Smith

CLEMSON — With Clemson senior receiver Tristan Smith having spent his first two seasons at the JUCO level playing for Hutchinson Community College, many have wondered whether or not the wideout could possibly be granted an extra year of eligibility.

There have been several examples of players who have played at the JUCO level being granted extra years of eligibility, most notably Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.

After Smith caught his first touchdown as a Tiger against SMU on Saturday, he revealed he is attempting to get that extra year.

“It’s in the works,” Smith told TCI after the loss to the Mustangs.

However, at this point in time, Smith isn’t overly concerned about next season. The 6-foot-5 receiver is only focused on doing what he can to help the Tigers get back on the winning track.

“I would rather focus on right now, like it is my last year,” Smith added. “Just having something to prove. playing this year like it is my last year ever playing football.”

Smith did his part in Saturday’s loss. His 23-yard contested touchdown catch with just under seven minutes to play pulled Clemson to within five at 29-25. It was one of the most contested touchdown catches from a Tigers’ wide receiver this season.

Serving as the backup to T.J. Moore, Smith has 11 receptions on the season for 113 yards and the lone touchdown grab, proving he is quite capable when he is on the field.

And if he does so happen to get another year, he’s having so much fun at Clemson that he is deadset on being back next season.

“If I just so happen to get another year, y’all are going to see me here next year,” Smith said. “I am going to be back right here next year.”
